As a response to DeSantis' craziness, in order to apply for admission, I wish colleges & universities would require an American History survey course that covers oppression of and effects on minority groups. (I.e. African Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, Mexican Americans, immigrants from S America & Middle East.. ) And if needed, the student must take it online (with financial aid to cover the cost if needed). Educate the population despite DeSantis.
My own little college, flawed though it may be, makes a point of teaching the entire history, all of it, and we work those conversations into other classes, as well -- particularly journalism classes. If you don't know the whole story, you don't have context, and you can't tell stories without context.
That's awesome! Cornell University requires every student to pass a swim test. They decided every student needed to know that upon entering or at least graduating. They all should do that sort of thing with history (& I'll add media literacy and fact checking).
The utter ignorance of the goofballs that I grew up with is at the same time confusing , amusing , infuriating and sad
It’s not ancient history that when I was a kid racial segregation was a thing
The governor of Alabama stood in the doorway of the university of Alabama to stop black students from entering
Hearing on the radio during the 70s that in Birmingham they love the governor never made me want to run out and get Lynyrd Skynyrd tickets
There was pushback about the lyrics with members of the band explaining how they were misinterpreted
But when the songs co-writer made a statement about it in 2009 it made my reluctance to get tickets feel more than justified
I can understand where the "boo boo boo" would be misunderstood. It's not US going "boo" ... it's what the Southern man hears the Northern man say every time the Southern man'd say "In Birmingham we love the gov'nor". Get it? "We all did what WE could do!" to get Wallace elected. It's not a popular opinion but Wallace stood for the average white guy in the South. "Watergate doesn't bother me" because that stuff happens in politics...but someone's conscience ought to bother them for what happened to Wallace. Arthur Bremer may or may not have been a yankee but he sure destroyed whatever chance Wallace had to be president. And hardly anyone in America noticed. I still like the plaque that hangs here in my office that says I'm an honorary member of the Alabama State Militia...signed personally by George C. Sure, the man had his flaws. But he spoke for the common man of the South. And, whoa, I'm gonna get in trouble over this whole dang post!"[16]
I love what spooled out from that song. "Sweet Home Alabama" begat "Southern Man" begat "Play It All Night Long" began "The Three Great Alabama Icons."

Now DeSantis is threatening to eliminate all AP classes in Florida public schools. Good. Less competition for schools and scholarships for CT students.
I'd love to see what meetings went in in the interim. When I open my own nonprofit, the meeting will be an email, sent straight from me to the governor and it will contain just two words.

I agree. Believe me, we hit both those topics hard in my department.
I'm glad to learn that when they turned their worm, it was a worm of forthright words.

Go, Drive-by Truckers.

He's a master at cutting off his nose to spite his face. What a goon.

And a possible run for president.
He'll be crushed once he leaves Florida. Sure, he has supporters, but sentient beings will rise up against this idiot.
I pray. So much competition from so many nuts.
When jackals turn on one another, I'm here for it.
