It's never too late to do the right thing
(Though waiting to do the right thing is never a good look)
The nonprofit education organization, the College Board, (finally) slapped back at the state of Florida over a discussion led by Gov. Grand Wizard Ron DeSantis about the teaching of an Advanced Placement course on African American studies, a course that is already being taught elsewhere.
Last month, DeSantis, a special kind of governor grand wizard, banned the course in Florida and he said this week that the state will “reevaluate” its relationship with the board, which isn’t a threat so much as a whatever-Mary.
In a statement released Saturday, the board said, among other things, that the organization:
“deeply regretted not immediately denouncing the Florida Department of Education’s slander, magnified by the DeSantis administration’s subsequent comments, that African American Studies ‘lacks educational value.’ Our failure to raise our voice betrayed Black scholars everywhere and those who have long toiled to build this remarkable field.”
For a brief look at what Florida students would be missing, should DeSantis and his ilk prevail, I cannot recommend enough the work of educator Marvin Dunn. Go here. And here’s more information about the actual course.
As a response to DeSantis' craziness, in order to apply for admission, I wish colleges & universities would require an American History survey course that covers oppression of and effects on minority groups. (I.e. African Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, Mexican Americans, immigrants from S America & Middle East.. ) And if needed, the student must take it online (with financial aid to cover the cost if needed). Educate the population despite DeSantis.
I'm glad to learn that when they turned their worm, it was a worm of forthright words.
