Brain-and-heart cleanser: Zohran Mamdani won the Dem primary for the NYC mayoral election handily.

Caveat and prayer: Please God the party notices and emulates his substance and policy focus for the people instead of just trying to destroy him.

We are proud constituents of Jahana Hayes. I pounded the pavement for her the first time around. She's had a few missteps, and as The Husband put it, she seems to be finding her sea legs.

I hope that is the case. I admire this particular vote of hers.

SHAME on the four entrenched Connecticut representatives. Remember they were silent when their colleague was muscled off the floor during the State of the Union. With the exception of hedge fund Jimmie, they are and old tired bunch that personify a major problem with the Democratic Party. The victory by a fresh face in NYC is an example of what we need here in the land of steady habits. I will be calling each of them today to express my extreme displeasure. THANK YOU Congressman Green, time to 537 47!

I was very surprised by the non-voters from CT. I too am very disappointed they cling to the we don’t have a majority excuse. It’s become a whine. Get over there and GET THE VOTES Surely they can see their Dem. colleagues that are spineless chair warmers/check collectors and the now wavering Republicans. Shake them up instead of sending emails asking for $$$.

I’m so over this two party BS! The party elites need to get their heads out of their a$$es and support candidates who listen to the people. The oligarchy isn’t just the wealthy, but the party establishment that protects them and passes laws that keep their wealth safe.

I agree with everything you said. But I still kinda think we should wait a little bit. ‘Wearing thin’ isn’t enough to convince me it would work. We’ve been fooled too many times in the last 10 years with dire ‘This is the end for T’ statements.

Only 2 from Massachusetts— Reps. Pressley and Trajan voted not to table, 7 voted to table including my rep. Keating. When is it enough? Not sure I know the answer, but clearly the Dems have a lot of work to do to win in the mid-terms. Zohran Mamdani’s win in New York should be an eye-opener for Dems. They should not discount the constituents that elected him. Dems need to embrace this NY wave and messaging, not shun it as a one-off. ( thinking of the pearl- wearing Sen. Elissa Slotkin). It’s complicated, I get that. Wish Ben Winkler was leading the Dems nationally.

For Reps in CT and Mass -- I don't see that voting not to table impeachment is a long shot. I think their voters would support them. I think it is coming from the leadership and this old guard cautious Dem mentality. That's my concern. They really need someone to shake them up.

I get the impression that I am the moderate in your midst, but as I take Susan at her word that she is interested in a conversation rather than yet another echo chamber, here we go. Firstly, I am not at all moderate about the need to neutralize DJT. What will it take for me to support yet another impeachment? Simple. Something ANYTHING that a chunk of Republicans agree with Democrats is cause for removal. Politics as morality is not helpful, especially when the other side has none. Politics is about the possible. I would beg the God of Heaven and Earth to have Trump do something so horrible that even the Republicans would want to can the man, but what that might be is hard to imagine and even harder to wish for. Oddly, I am delighted with Rep. Hayes' vote. I am in the 5th District and am glad to see some independent thinking on her part.

It is not "odd" to seek to impeach a President who has initiated a war in clear violation of the Constitutional separation of powers.

Stephen Hard's avatar

What's odd is not Rep. Hayes' vote, but that I am pleased with it because it demonstrates a measure of independence from the "party line" that I have not seen in her before. Others from her district made the same observation on this thread. What I am trying to convey is that Democrats have to stop doing what makes them feel good because they have the moral high ground, and work the system for what it is, which is based on votes and not on what you or I think is right. Does Trump deserve to be impeached? Duh. Is it helpful, politically, to do so if there is no path to his removal. That's a firm no in my thinking. If that changes I will be the first one to jump on the impeachment and removal bandwagon. Until then it is a distraction and will weaken Democrats and strengthen Republicans. And look, no one is talking about that Big Beautiful Bill anymore. If we want to work on Republicans on the fence there is the place to do it.

And yet here you are putting your back into urging Dems to do nothing but court Republicans. Oh, and wait quietly until the spontaneous appearance of the One Perfect Shot.

Expand full comment
Stephen Hard's avatar

Not at all. You may not have read all of my other posts. It seems clear that court challenges are having good effect so let give Trump a bit of his own medicine. That's his gambit, but we can use it too. The other thing that seemed very effective was the orchestrated No Kings Protests so let's have more of those. Let's put our time, effort, energy, and money where it can have some effect. Of course there will be trial and error. No Kings was a trial effort, but we've tried the impeachment thing twice already without success. What's that definition of mental illness? One can argue all you like that the bombing of Iran was different. You're right. His loonies are even more enthrall and there is simply no way that or any of the other horrible things Trump has done will lead enough Republicans to vote for his removal. To be honest, I am much less bothered by his bombing Iran's nuclear sites than I am by how he has trashed our relationships with our allies and that's not even illegal.
