It costs about $8 million of taxpayer money a day to operate Congress. Republicans not only totally wasted yesterday--they have a plan in place to waste every single day over the next two years.

I hope the Dems don't waste this opportunity. It's a great chance for some powerful messaging: Over the last two years, members of our party went to work every day and we got things done that are making our lives better. We invested in infrastructure, created millions of manufacturing jobs, moved chip production out of China and back on shore, rallied the world against Russian aggression, expanded benefits for veterans. Republicans opposed us every single step of the way. Now Republican politicians are in charge. Their plan is to do a whole lot of nothing and get paid for it. That's how they define fiscal responsibility. Just look at yesterday. If you're sick of paying taxes that support lazy, lying politicians, tell the leaders of the Republican Party to get off their butts, roll up their sleeves, stop their lying and get to work for their paychecks.

$8 million. When I read a figure like that attached to governance, I think of what that could buy in the way of feeding the poor, housing the homeless. What Stan said.

My granny’d say, “she’s full of spit and vinegar,” about you! Then spit a wad in the Folgers can. You are a kick! Just what I need on the NJT! Hi ho! These subscriptions read better than newspapers, and I still read them too!

I'm glad you're loyal to newspapers. They could use the customers. This is an immensely partisan view of the news that righteously correct, but still partisan.

I subscribe to the usual news sources, and the partisan views connect me to like-minded writers. Also read some here that are not the like-minded. They read more conversationally with many real time wise folks I’d otherwise never come to mind. ⚔️

Well said Susan. The Dems need to use this! ⚔️

This is an absolute clown show. The Repugnicans are in a circle formation, guns pointed at each other, and ready to fire. They are worse than insolent children.

The George Santos nonsense makes them look worse, and the longer the Speaker stalemate continues, the more the American people will wonder why those people were elected.

That's the hope and if they can't see this, let's, as Stan says, help them see this.

As professor Richardson delineated in her blog today one of the first things the gQp did was remove the metal detectors from the House. Imagine this happening while coup supporters like Perry, Biggs, Jordan were demonstrating their continued disdain for democracy! All of yesterday's theatrics played out while McCarthy sat there being humiliated by his peers! Some leader?!?

Expand full comment

That was unbelievable. Who authorized that? McCarthy? He's simply a U.S. representative, not a Speaker. I learned how much I dislike Chip Roy and his politics yesterday.

I know they all had families and friends present but I’m a little surprised that the dems agreed to adjournment with barely a “nay!” last night, passing on at least one more clown show vote in prime time. They may have lost a roll call vote anyway but I’m still puzzled. The optimist in me might suggest there’s a bi-partisan back channel working. The realist in me finds that hard to believe.

I wonder about that, too. I thought they'd send the kids home to go to bed and they'd all settle in for multiple votes, each one more embarrassing to the GOP than the last. But then, I'm not a political strategist (no shit, Susan). I'm more of the "no quarter asked, no quarter given." I shall be in the audience for today's clown-dumpster-fire-show.
