When on a rare occasion I hear somebody spew their Godliness while attacking immigrants, the homeless, addicts I butt in and ask if they know the words Jesus professed in the Sermon on the Mount! Invariably I get a blank stare. Jesus surrounded himself with those that many of us would cross the street to avoid! He was not a glad hander who was part of a mutual adoration society! Sadly the loud Christians seem to suck all the oxygen out of the room.

While I understand the concept of foot washing, to say it grosses me out is an understatement. Sorry, I do not do feet. I do not want your feet anywhere near me. I do not want your feet touching me. This commercial literally made me want to hurl on numerous levels. To think what good could have been done with that money instead of assaulting my eyes with people touching feet. I got up and left the room. A pox on the "He Gets Us" people. Stupor Bowl commercials do not normally impact me in a negative fashion. This year was the exception not only once, but twice. This shite, and then the Kennedy thing.

Ah, the Kennedy thing. That was painful, too. Foot-washing is simply a matter of humbling yourself to do something you might not want to. You're under no obligation to do so and in all my years in a pew or years being pew-adjacent, I've never washed any feet other than my own.

At my old Episcopal church, at least one Maundy Thursday service featured a foot washing by one of the clergy. It made me uncomfortable. I think it's supposed to make us uncomfortable. Are we called to imitate Jesus in a very real sense, or are we called to abstractly "believe" in him? Hmmm.

Maybe I am getting to cynical but, whenever you see He Gets US ads, Hobby Lobby and even I heard, there was an ad showing the sacrifice of Dads in Isreal . I always feel extreme evangelical Christians and the AIPAC Washington DC lobby they finance not far behind.
