On Tuesday, 153 members of the United Nations General Assembly voted to demand a humanitarian cease-fire to end the Israel-Hamas war.
Twenty-three nations abstained from the vote, and 10 — including an increasingly isolated United States and Israel — voted against the resolution. The general vote was, according to France24, “a call the paralysed Security Council has so far failed to make.” (Last Friday, the U.S. vetoed a similar resolution at the 15-member UN Security Council.)
Earlier, Carl Skau, deputy director of the UN World Food Program, said that half of Gaza’s population is starving. Roughly 40% of Gaza is 14 or younger. Their health care system is collapsing and the death toll is rising for Israelis and Palestinians.
But according to testimony from U.S. Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield:
"Any ceasefire right now would be temporary at the best and dangerous at worst - dangerous to Israelis, who would be subject to relentless attacks, and also dangerous to Palestinians, who deserve the chance to build a better future for themselves, free from Hamas."
A United Nations resolution is not legally binding unless the Security Council adopts same. With the U.S.’s presence on the council, that may not happen soon, but that’s not a reflection of everyone’s attitude in the U.S., particularly young Americans. And though the below poll is from late October, such a stance isn’t all that reflective of the rest of us, either.
Our 'blind eye' billion dollar unconditional support of Israel is now coming back to haunt us! Unconditional love comes from our pets, humans are incapable of this as proven time and time again. Don't believe me just pick up and read a history book! We need to be a voice FOR humanity in the UN and for once stand on principle and maybe even present a proposal that the UN can support to end this madness?!?
USA has been supporting Israel for decades. Not caring about the destruction of Palestinian lands, illegal settlers crimes against them. No matter what they do we GIVE THEM TAXPAYERS' money from USA and don't forget money to develop their anti-missile program. What Israel is doing is inhumane and it is time we stop calling "anti-semitism" any criticism of the genocide that is happening now 18,000 dead Palestinians not enough for Bibi? and Biden and his cabinet has been a disgrace. Israel's occupation could have been stopped instead of supported and this is the result. The famous Balfour treaty a piece of paper signed by the UK should have never been implemented...
