Maybe you’ve already researched this, but The Writers Guild of America has gone on strike for a host of reasons, including better compensation. (Back in April, nearly 98% of the guild’s members voted to take this step, should negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers fall apart — and negotiations did just that.)
This week, celebrities like that dreamy Rob Lowe joined the writers on the picket line. SAG-AFTRA issued a statement supporting the strike. In addition, Australian, British and Canadian guilds told their members to take their hands off keyboards in the U.S. as a show of support.
This is a pretty good explanation of what’s happening, from the Guild, itself. Those of us who live on streaming services may not see much effect — yet — but it’s streaming services that have helped bring this to a head. Meanwhile, the entertainment industry remains extremely profitable, and Paramount’s CEO seems to think his organization can weather this.
But good luck with that. No writers? No content.
Maybe consumers should strike? After all we pay exorbitant rates for cable and streaming services. In CT Comcast is owned by NBC and subscribers are limited with choices as they are a monopoly for cable! Hopefully the writers will prevail and get a fair deal?
Go, writers!
