I imagine divestment from vaguely defined types of investments of a large endowment would take time and be an on-going process. In other words, agreement to do it doesn't mean it'll be done tomorrow. I like what Northwestern U is doing.
I'm not surprised they more quickly reached a resolution. Back in my college days, I worked for a professor from the business school who was doing research work with a law professor on resolving labor union disputes through mediation (vs arbitration). I would guess Northwestern had some experts available to assist in resolving this current situation.
All the protests, all the calls for blue blood universities to divest distract from the murders, rapes, pillaging and hostage taking that were perpetuated by Hamas, a terrorist organization committed to killing Jews and eliminating the state of Israel. I agree with the right to peaceful protests and calling for the elites to divest BUT we cannot sugar coat Hamas and treat them like they care about the population they were entrusted to govern. In America we have MAGA cultists who deny the Holocaust! Right here in CT we've had NUMEROUS acts of anti-semitism within our neighborhoods. We must stand up against hate, indiscriminate killing of innocents and NEVER forget history that inevitably repeats itself!
Absolutely. I wish for everyone to be able to hold two thoughts at once: That Netanyahu is committing genocide and that is the head of the Israeli government, NOT Jews. I felt the same way when Trump was in office. Please do not confuse me and mine with the government leader.
Exactly how I have been feeling. Also, many Israelis loathe Netanyahu and what he has been doing since before the Hamas horrors of October. He wants to take over the judiciary and worse. The antisemitism is obscene. And judging all citizens because of Netanyahu is EXACTLY like judging me and Americans by what the President does. The antisemite horrors take it all a step further. Oh, Susan, so much hate...
It's the indiscriminate killing currently going on now that the protesters are trying to stop. On many campuses, there are Jewish organizations that are participants in the protests. The whole point is to prevent future murder or injury or starvation of innocent people, regardless of ethnicity or religion. However, like any group of people, there is a range of views and opinions. We shouldn't let the outliers distract us from the primary message. And the outliers shouldn't be permitted to bully or oppress others, as well. From where I sit, Netanyahu looks like an outlier with leadership power. Many Jewish people do not support what he is doing in Gaza. I don't know how anyone could support the indiscriminate murder of (tens of ?) thousands of women and children. Opposing Netanyahu's military attacks on innocents can be pro-human life, not antisemitic. Opposing Hamas attacks on innocents can also be pro-human life, not anti-Muslim or anti-Palestinian.
I wish some people would not refer to colleges and universities as being "blue blood" or "elite", as a way to discredit them. It's not reality, for one.
The GOP has been intent on attacking educational institutions. I don't think they like educated people. So, they attempt to convince older generations and those who are not college educated that they are horrible places, filled with liberal indoctrination of a privileged, lazy-minded students. Again, it's not reality.
Let me reply by saying I oppose NetanYAHOO and his racist government. As an alum of a NH state college let me also say I have a dim view of the elite colleges and universities that graduated the likes of Cruz, Hawley, and the buffoon from Ohio! The endowments and other funds these elite schools have amassed are staggering and I am happy to see some of the students calling for divestment. Finally the MAGA cult does in fact enjoy the support of the less educated. They support banning books and imposing crazy policies on the local and state level. That’s my story and I am proud of my liberal arts college education where I was taught to be a critical thinker, oh and many of my profs were Ivy leaguers. Peace.
Let's not forget, Cruz's alma mater was also where Michelle Obama and Sonia Sotomayor went to school. I don't think it's fair to hold disdain for the school based on a particular graduate's post-graduate behavior. Similarly, a student who is smart and does well in school does not necessarily mean the person is compassionate and kind, and uses their intellectual talents for good.
Tangent: Man, so much coverage of the protests make me sad, attributing all violence to students or “outside agitators” and non to antis or police, the anti-Semitic behavior of some protesters to all; and declining entirely to discuss body counts and rubble in Gaza.
When divestment movements are sufficiently large, they drive down the price of stocks and bonds that have already been issued by the adverse nation or its major firms. That does not affect the adverse nation or its firms directly, but does tend to drive down the prices of new issues of stocks and bonds (=drive up the interest rates paid on them). That costs the adverse nation directly, and can move its major firms to press it to change policy.
Insofar as divestment is a purity routine for those urging or performing it, I’m not into it.
Insofar as divestment, like removing the iron railings in London, makes people otherwise not actively involved feel personally invested in international policy, I’m about it.

That's what's called for here, I think, experts who know what they're doing.

True...

Again: It's possible to hold two thoughts at once but we're not seeing that in news coverage.
Maybe we can even hold THREE thoughts at once.
