I don’t know why those incessant “democracy is dying” articles piss me off so much. Maybe we are, but it seems…unAmerican?… to focus so much on our imminent demise and act so little to stop it.
And yet, there are signs that we may be doing better than we pretend. On Tuesday:
Virginia Democrats took back their state legislature, after multiple accounts about the winningest Republican of them all, Rep. Gov. Glenn. Youngkin.
Ohio (as Connecticut did back in the ‘90s) codified in their state constitution the right to reproductive freedom.
Kentucky re-elected their Democratic governor.
And in Derby, Conn., voters said no, thank you, but no to a Republican mayoral candidate who attended the Jan. 6th insurrection. They elected, instead, a Democrat in a four-way race.
So when CNN mentions a “Biden drag,” I just toss stuff at the screen.
My city went FULL MAGA! A book banning, anti-vaxx, anti-semite was elected to the BOE! A three percenter was elected to the council! By the way the mayor who was overwhelmingly reelected appointed BOTH of those loons to vacated positions prior to them joining the ticket for 11/7. So while there are glimmers of hope we cannot let our guard down and have to realize the louds and wackos vote. Based on the anemic voter turn out that should concern all of us.
The election results calmed me down a good bit. I do realize presidentiall polls this far out are notoriously wrong, but it IS hard to stay calm. This helps. Panic doesn't.
