This is the comment I left on Professor Richardson's Substack today in which I try to put some recent historical perspective into the mix. "When reviewing recent history of the Congress, we see the hard right shift began with the so-called "Freedom Caucus" (although their is a direct line back to Gingrich's vile reign of acrimony). Since their arrival they have purged the House of many moderate Republicans including a couple of Speakers, remember John Boehner and Paul Ryan?!? The "Freedom Caucus" crew caught the eye of 45 so he used them in pursuit of his goal to gut foundational governmental agencies, Putin's dream come true! Mulvaney, Meadows et al happily joined 45's administration and contributed to the steady diet of lies and deceit that deeply divide us. We are in a bad place I hope and pray we can recover." McCarthy, McHenry, and Santos leave nothing but tracks in the sand!

I would not be surprised to hear McConnell announce next that he's stepping down.

That’s the first name that came to my mind. She isn’t polling great. In typical MAGA cult fashion, she can quit now and say she wants, ala McCarthy, “to serve America in new ways.” That way she avoids running for reelection and remains forever a winner inside her walnut sized brain. She can get together with Santos, Michele Bachman, Madison Cawthorn, Sarah Palin, etc. and form a think tank. Their logo will be a fuel gauge with a needle that looks like an AR-15 stuck on “E”.

Indeed Paul,

Susan’s question was: Who did we think would be next? Lord have mercy, if the question had been: Which ones did we wish to see next? The list would have been long and ugly !

I would not be surprised to hear that McConnell had fallen down and couldn’t get up. Therefore he would have to leave. Because it seems obvious that he is not going to leave voluntarily but wait for God the angels and as you say, Susan, the baby Jesus to call him home.

They apparently have developed a real zest for going after the Speaker. The past internecine warfare, and the rule change that makes it much easier to remove a GOP Speaker guarantees this practice will flourish in the compost heap known as the GOP caucus
