The first 4th of July after my divorce I went to cape cod with my daughter who was 11 at the time
We camped in North Truro and we decided to go to the parade in Ptown
As we were standing on the sidewalk watching the parade go by I could see a fire engine coming down the road and they were throwing what I assumed was candy from the truck
As the truck passed my daughter bent down to pickup some contraband from the ground when she asked me , what’s this??
And so it was on the sidewalk of Ptown during a 4th of July parade that I explained to my 11 year old daughter what a prophylactic was
She asked me why they would throw it from the fire engine and I told her that maybe they figured fewer people meant fewer fires
She asked me if I wanted it and I said sure , I’ll take it
She asked me what I was going to do with it and I shrugged and said, I don’t know , maybe make a water balloon
She said , you can do that??
I said yup , as soon as we get back to the camp ground
It was a weekend of firsts for her
Her first time at the cape
Her first time making s’mores at a campfire on the beach
Her first time meeting a bearded lady
And her first time making a prophylactic water balloon
I wouldn’t want to be responsible for making the call but we got lucky. The Boom Box parade went off as planned, the rain stopping about a half hour before it started. Fewer marchers than usual but I was surprised by the spectator turnout. It’s easier to make a last second decision if you’re not marching and it looked like a lot of people did. The crowd is was in a good mood. It was fun, as always. I wake up on the 4th like a kid on Christmas.
It's just such an awesome parade. I've gone to it, but I've committed to marching in my own town's parade (which is kind of quirky and sweet). But when that commitment ends? I'm SO coming to cheer on the boom boxers.

Honestly? I love this story so much.
I love it ! You handled that situation perfectly. You and your daughter must share special bond of which this is a great example.
I’m now going to smile all day. 😁
I dropped by the library (I'm on the board) to return the banner we were going to carry, but I couldn't off-load the candy. Healthy people worry me.
All my major physical injuries have happened in the pursuit of fitness. Just going to show it’s a bad idea.
We share a pew on this.
Susan, I love you more and more, with every sniput you share from your life. Thank you.
Well, thank you! And I love YOU.
Kind of the opposite of "they tried to throw a war but nobody came."
Yah, they’re scary. 😅
