Mrs. Meyer was 98 BUT the stress of seeing the Gestapo-like raid at the paper’s office then their home certainly contributed to her death. So many take our freedoms for granted, let this raid on our heretofore free press be a call to action, especially this November. Even here in the land of steady habits we have an Insurrectionist running in the gQp mayoral primary in Derby! Freedom is not forever in Oceania!

Susan, I know this is particularly heartbreaking for you due to your connection to the area. Rumor has it, as in any small town, that there's some horizontal mambo action happening with the police chief, the restaurant owner, and maybe the prosecutor. I'll take that info with a grain of salt, but would not be surprised. That being said... The hubris of these incompetent buffoons thinking they could get away with this has me gobsmacked. I hope the paper sues the shit out of the police department, and in the process, expose, via discovery, this police chief for what he is. AND as for the judge who signed off on this ridiculous warrant? Lastly, Mrs. Meyer, you are now in the Great Beyond which gives you great power. Might I suggest some visits to these cretins to scare the living daylights out of them? Now THAT would be fun.

I’ve read those rumors and we add it to the pyre. The sad fact is this threesome committed a fascist act against a newspaper and we should not let this pass.

A local (East Hartford CT) police chief once told the truth by accident: that there is a cap on IQ when it comes to officer recruitment. No one wants a cop who likes thinking about things. Shoot first, ask questions later - or, in this case, figure out your alibi later. And nothing enrages the ranks more than having their actions questioned by mere members of the public - because they DON'T have honest answers.

I experienced that "attitude" after finding my stolen car in a parking lot near my condo. The Bristol police officer told me it was a popular place to dump stolen cars to which I (the tow truck driver chimed in as well) I replied, "If that's the case, why was I the one that found the car (not knowing about the stolen car dump thing), and not you?" He wasn't too happy with that question.

Honestly, my experience with police is that they ARE thinking people, able to discern and apply good judgment. I’m sorry if East Hartford isn’t hiring the best.

The aforementioned experience was in Bristol. The New Haven PD had a less than stellar response to a DV incident involving one of my roommates. It was pre-Tracey Thurman.

That's terrible. I hope your (former?) roommate is OK.

May Joan rest in peace now that all of the things seized in the raid were returned by the prosecutor who KNEW that there was no legal sufficiency for the seizure.

May Ms. Meyer rest In peace.

May the upshots augment her peaceful ease.

However, the raid was remarkable as much as anything for having become well-known. I think that unless a whole lot of action follows, the intimidation effect remains. Moreover, as kashana.bsky.social said on Bluesky, "All they to do is return all the stuff and bring that dead woman back to life and they’re all good."

This is true. Returning the wrongfully-seized items won't ease this family's loss.
