Gov. Greg Abbott put another brick onto his house in hell over the weekend, when on Christmas Eve, he had delivered to Vice President Kamala Harris’s house about 130 migrants riding in three buses.
It was 18 degrees that night, and the people came dressed mostly in t-shirts. Once you’ve done this — multiple times — you’ve removed yourself from any kind of moral argument.
He’s losing the battle on this, because on the receiving end of this kind of crass political theater are people like Amy Fischer, an organizer with Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid Network, who told CNN:
“The DC community has been welcoming buses from Texas anytime they’ve come since April. Christmas Eve and freezing cold weather is no different. We are always here welcoming folks with open arms.”
Should you be so moved, you can help the D.C. efforts here. Should you be so moved, you can contact Gov. Abbott here. Maybe you, too, will get an email suitable for framing:
(I was not abusive, threatening, or vulgar. I told the governor’s office what I thought about his treating people like cattle, and I told him that I would devote no small amount of energy and money helping his opponent, come next election. So we can add “defensive whiner” to the governor’s other personality traits.)
Abbott actually had the gall to post a Christmas bible verse on twitter. Someone responded with a meme that said, “Whenever a republican quotes the Bible, an Angel projectile vomits.”
Since Abbott has been quoting Bible verses, perhaps that should be countered by quoting verses that directly apply. It won't change the evil that he embodies, but for those who at least purport to be bound to follow the dictates of Scripture, it may be instructive or at least give them pause.
Leviticus 19:34
“The foreigners residing among you must be treated as native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God.”
