Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Q-Anon, GA-14, has again called on states whose residents don’t agree with Pres. Biden to leave the union because secession worked out so well for states that left the union that first time.
Of course, once you’ve reached your limit on Greene’s racism, her calls for the impeachment of Pres. Biden (which even her colleagues say is absurd) and once you tire of her hatred of made-up things like the Gazpacho Police, it is tempting to wish the Georgia representative and her ilk godspeed. Take your piddly-ass state economies and your crap health care and uneducated workforce and shove that all right on u….
But should we wish that on the state of Georgia, even if we’re talking about those voters who think MTG is a viable, human representative (and not a hairball)? There’s plenty to unpack here, but here’s what I keep coming back to: Greene’s state was the last of the Confederate states to be readmitted into the Union, in February 1870 — and this only after legislators ratified the 15th Amendment, which I’m pretty sure Greene has not read. The heart of that amendment is:
Perhaps you can understand how an elected representative in a state that prides itself on denying voting rights and gerrymandering would have her knickers in a historic twist over discouraging by hook and by crook Certain People from the polls.
Things are starting to get interesting in Greene’s state, voting-rights-wise, and maybe Greene thinks a throwback to the confederacy would allow her to keep her meaty paws on the reins of power.
It probably isn’t. Her last race was as expensive as a seat in the U.S. House gets. For what it’s worth, here’s Marcus Flowers’ graceful concession X-witter. Republicans, take note. This is how you concede defeat.
All that to say: I think being a part of the union and having to answer to people outside the Rome, Ga., Metroplex is uniquely uncomfortable to hometown girl MTG. So let’s keep her, at least until 2024, which is her next primary, when Georgia voters must again search their hearts to see if MTG still lives there.
I’m going to hope that good-hearted people — even people hell-bent on holding onto political power — will tire of Greene and her antics and maybe even start to feel a little bit ashamed for their part in keeping her in D.C. In fact, at that point, I think those of us with the resources to do so should make her our special purpose. Bless. Her. Heart.
Immigration policy certainly needs an overhaul, but Republicans' only response for many administrations and many Congresses has been "cease all immigration except from white Western Europeans." Since most rational white Western Europeans are happy where they live and aren't flocking here, it's not a realistic policy. MTG is just throwing stuff against the wall to see what will stick. She knows secession is unrealistic and would be much harder on her cons4tituents than it would be on the people they hate.
Electing "people" like MTG is proof that mean spirited loud mouths have a platform and with "leaders" like McTrump power! Dangerous times.
