The New York Times published the above graph as a means of explaining why Zohran Mamdani became NYC’s Democratic candidate for mayor in a crowded field that included sex pest (and former mayor) Andrew Cuomo.
Young voters definitely played a role in Mamdani’s success, but why can neither the Times nor Democratic leaders accept that voters are giving up on politics-as-usual, because those politics helped deliver us to our current hellscape. As Vox says here, the Democratic party is ripe for a takeover.
Yes. By Democrats. Or, as Howard Dean said, we need more from the Democratic wing of the Democratic party.
This nostalgia is killing us, as evidenced by situations by people who keep trying to push Michelle Obama into the ring (she ain’t going) but, with all respect to the former First Lady, we need new blood.
Pushing David Hogg out was a bad idea. There’s far more support for primarying do-nothing Democrats that the leadership appears to believe. Ditch the familiar names. Put your pinkie down, and let’s go.
Totally agree. I literally stepped away from my local Democratic organization ten years ago because I thought it was time for new and younger people with new and fresher ideas. Truthfully, if older people don't step aside, the younger people will never take on the roles that they need to step into. We need that on the national level too. Hogg was right -- he was pushing for primarying do-nothing Dems sitting fat and comfortable in seats in Congress while doing zip. That scared the crap out of the old guard and, so, they shoved him out. Pathetic.
Disgusted me that the Dems in NY ran Cuomo - flawed candidate who turned people off because he had to resign over his inappropriate behavior. I'm sure the thinking was -- well, Trump is a sex pest and adjudicated rapist so Cuomo's stuff won't matter --- BUT they forgot that the Trump thing is a CULT and Cuomo doesn't have a cult propping him up and bowing to him.
It's just time to turn the page. It's time for Schumer to exit the stage and a raft of the others so that some new ideas and younger people can come on the scene.
Keep pushing for the change that our party needs.
Why did they push David Hogg out? He was a promising candidate!
