There are 220 Republicans in the House of Representatives right now, and 212 Democrats (there were 215, but three Democratic representatives have died since the beginning of March).
A simple majority is needed to pass articles of impeachment, and right now, the GOP appears to be in lock-step with one another to take this country to hell. However, that doesn’t mean some members wouldn’t respond to pressure from their constituents and others for such an important vote. And according to this, a scorecard based on voting records, there might be some wiggle room for certain Republican representatives.
Now on to the removal part. Republicans have 53 seats in the U.S. Senate, while Democrats have 45 (with two independents who tend to vote with Democrats — Angus King of Maine and Bernie Sanders of Vermont. In this case, there must be a two-thirds vote to remove, so the hurdle is (I’m doing math on a calculator because I do not trust myself) 66 votes. Given that (one would assume) all Democrats and independents can see this for what it is and would vote to remove, the hurdle is 9 votes. That’s nine Republicans who can see their way through to do the right thing.
Here’s what some of them said the last time they sidestepped their constitutional duties. Let’s hold their feet to the fire this time.
So who might be the best people to whom we address our concerns. The Republicans with the highest progressive score (again, according to their voting records) are Susan. Collins (I know, I know); Rand Paul (eww, but he has signaled he’s not fully in line with this fascist regime); Lisa Murkowski; Mike Lee (resign, Mike, because you suuuck); Aint Pitty-Pat Lindsey Graham; the manly Josh “I Heart Insurrectionists” Hawley; Chuck Grassley (if he’s still alive. by the end of this sentence), and Dan Sullivan, Murkowski’s colleague.
If that’s not a rogue’s gallery, I don’t know my gallery.
But do you have a better idea?
Meanwhile, there are several grassroots efforts to impeach him again, and then remove him from office. I believe I’m going to throw my weight into this and I invite you to do the same.
I SO want to see him gone, but I am scared to death about Commanders Vance and Johnson assuming power. They are younger, but insidious, and just as dangerous. I can't begin to imagine where they would take women's rights -- whether it's reproductive rights or voting.
Thank you for this Substack and I agree with all it! 👍
