Occasionally I find value in some of the teachings of Jesus. I read this parable again, and it is not only fitting for this situation, it is very powerful.

Jesus said: "A man was going from Guatamala, fleeing a drug cartel that wanted to kill him and seize his daughters as sex slaves, when he found himself on the brink of starvation, having crossed a desert, a river, and another desert with limited supplies and no money.

He went to a prosperity gospel preacher for help, but they had just had the carpets cleaned so the preacher refused him shelter. He went to the Christian governor for help, but the governor shipped him to Martha's Vineyard with no support or direction so he could own the libs.

But a pinko, commie libtard saw him and took pity on him. He clothed him, and fed him, and sheltered him. He brought him to an immigration lawyer and said 'Look after him. When I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.'

"Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell victim to drug cartels and gangs?"

The expert in the law replied, "The bleeding heart, pinko commie libtard who had mercy on him."

Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise."

This reminds me of the Gregory Porter song “Take me to the alley”.

Not only did DeSantis dump people on MV, Atty. Self explained that they were given next step appointments all over the country so they’d hopefully be sent back to their home countries. 🤯 My parents both grew up in Mass. I’ve spent a lot of time there over the years. I was happy to see how the good people of MV rallied to meet the needs of the migrants. Seeing the smiles on their faces as they left MV brought a tear to my eye and filled me with pride.

You have a lot to be proud of on their reaction. Seriously so.

There doesn't seem to be anything legal about it, or doesn't seem to be anything illegal about it? (It does seem to be kidnapping and human trafficking. But surely, oh, the transport company had its licenses in order?)

I like your use of the Beatitudes. Elsewhere, I said:

As tweeter @jsrailton says, "Whatever you thought about the governors' stunt... it turns out it was worse."

As the Bible says, "And you shall declare and you shall say before your God, ‘My ancestor was a wandering Aramean, and he went down to Egypt, and there he dwelt as an alien few in number, and there he became a great nation, mighty and numerous. And the Egyptians treated us badly, and they oppressed us and imposed on us hard labor. And we cried to Yahweh, the God of our ancestors, and Yahweh heard our voice and saw our affliction and our toil and our oppression. ...

"‘Cursed be the one who misleads a blind person on the road.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

"‘Cursed be the one who deprives the alien, the orphan, and the widow of justice.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’"

(Deuteronomy 26:5-7, 27: 18-19.

As a Catholic Deacon… I am not overly bothered that his faith has failed him.

Inam profoundly bothered that he has failed his faith.

Thank you Susan. This man is despicable. Hats off to the people of MV for their gracious hospitality. I thought by the age of 75 I had seen it all but I was mistaken. This was cruelty beyond measure.

I feel the same way. How low, really, can they go?

TFG's rally with the crowd giving him a Nazi salute should be a clue as to how low they can - and intend to - go.

A new low for the REPUGlicants. How do they sleep at night?

I ask myself that, a lot.

Pretty sure I read it was the local Episcopal church that led the charge, but I'm sure others were involved. Do you think DeSantis's parish priest is going to deny him communion for this?

NAH!

No. But let DeSantis so much as breathe a pro-choice breath, and he's outta there...

The solution and correct response is to confiscate any buses and airplanes and this will abruptly end. It would take months to seek a legal remedy to return transports. And it will send a much needed message because after all, this is all about messaging and voting and honesty, I’m sick and tired of democrats not knowing how to respond to this aberrant behavior.

Expand full comment

How would you confiscate buses and airplanes? You mean while they're in transit? Once the migrants are loaded? I like this, but don't know how it would be implemented.

Expand full comment

Well, I’m not in the confiscation business but I have consistently thought that after passengers are unloaded, that officials immediately take possession. This may or may not hold up in court but the main objective in my opinion, would be to let prospective transport companies know that they will be without their services for awhile. And yes, there would be suits and counter suits claiming loss of revenue. Par for the course. The side benefit might be to communicate to the public that our democratic-majority cities and states arguing to take it any longer. This has importance because this is ultimately a political fight for people to rally around. It simply is.

Ava said it below about invoking the law.

Concerning the legality of those flights, bus trips, etc.: does this federal statute apply?

Title 8, U.S.C. § 1324(a) defines several distinct offenses related to aliens. Subsection 1324(a)(1)(i)-(v) prohibits alien smuggling, domestic transportation of unauthorized aliens, concealing or harboring unauthorized aliens, encouraging or inducing unauthorized aliens to enter the United States, and engaging in a conspiracy or aiding and abetting any of the preceding acts.

Domestic Transporting -- Subsection 1324(a)(1)(A)(ii) makes it an offense for any person who -- knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that an alien has come to, entered, or remains in the United States in violation of law, transports, or moves or attempts to transport or move such alien within the United States by means of transportation or otherwise, in furtherance of such violation of law.

So much coercion there. I remain stunned that this was even considered, much less carried out.

Maybe I missed it but I thought these folks were not illegal or unauthorized but in the proper and legal process of being granted legal status here in the wonderful US of A.

Expand full comment

Correct. They sought asylum and were already accepted as such by the federal authorities and in engaged in the process. Facts, however, are irrelevant to DeSantis. Apparently federal regulations, honesty, and any sense of human decency are as well.

That’s the probable reason to confiscate and maybe arrest the drivers or pilots.

As a born and raised Catholic I’ve been taught about guilt, shame, sin: Iwill not hold my breath waiting for the Bishops to condemn the cruelty and sinfulness of DeSantis. The duplicity of the old white men in funny costumes never ceases to amaze me - they deserve no relief from their guilt and sin and surely lack shame! Thank you for including The Beatitudes🙏

To be honest, I keep waiting for the American bishops to weigh in. They have done so in the past.

I hope they charge DeSantis for breaking some law. It can't be legal for the Governor to lie to these people and do this. Real leaders gather people together to work on & solve problems. He prefers to selfishly grandstand. He's weak, lacks compassion for these vulnerable people, and is far from a capable leader.

And if only we could call on Jesus (Not GOP Jesus) to be the Special Master on a bunch of things!

How can it be legal for DeS-whatever to move immigrants of any status from TEXAS to anywhere with FLORIDA funds. And the funds he used are probably not legal for this stunt -er- trip.

GOP Jesus: Man, I’m sorry I didn’t think of that first. That is incredibly funny. It’s right up my ally. I was brought up in St Joseph’s Catholic school. I came to repudiate everything at the end and by 7th grade, the principal, Father Emerling expelled me. But I have a complete understanding of the Catholic bible. Man, they were weird.

There are numerous different Latin American immigrant groups in Florida. Their histories go back more the a century and their movement into Florida has been continual. Miami is frequently referred to as the Capitol of Latin America. While some of them, Cuban-American Floridians in particular, lean conservative, this could end up being a political miscalculation on DeSantis’ part. Some reporter needs to ask DeSantis’ what if he would have done the same during the Mariel boatlift.
