I still cry at the National Anthem. I put my hand over my heart and I sing along, and it makes me feel a little silly. I mean, what kind of patriotic nonsense is this?
I’m not saluting the flag, per se, but the idea of the flag. Yes, I know that eight of the first 10 U.S. presidents owned slaves, and that women were never included in the conversation in any meaningful way, but when you read the Constitution (paying attention to just the words, not the actual application), I am reminded of what we could be.
I feel the same way when I read the Beatitudes in the Bible. I know what Christianity is now, but I also know what it could be. That may make me naive, but there you are. Despite the best evidence, I remain a believer.
So. I wish you a happy Fourth of July, however short we’ve fallen from the American ideal. Swords up.
While I can understand your sentiments , I believe that if we as a country can start to accept the reality that on July 4 1776 a divided nation was cobbled together because of a common enemy we might be able to work together so that one day we can truly be united
We really do have a long way to go to get there
But I’m willing to do what I can to reach that dream
