It could be even harder to protect the jury from being seen at all. Apparently, the coutroom is small. Still, I wish we could, too, or even just have access to recordings. I do not care to see his theatrics--he'd be even worse. I've seen him enough, frankly. But I would rather hear the attorneys and witnesses, and the judge, when he calls them to the bench or tells T to sit down, etc.

This trial should be televised. You are correct that DT uses every opportunity to address the public at the court breaks—with no filter, spewing lie after lie. That is frustrating. I am watching morning news and of course his comments after yesterday’s end of testimony aired in full, no context— nothing to counter his lies. Morning news—do better.

There’s such a reluctance to call out lies. A responsible journalist could, and counter with facts. It won’t change the mind of his base, but leaving those lines sitting on the table is offensive.

While generally I support broadcasting the trial, it concerns me that Trump would intentionally or unintentionally blow up the trial faced with the presence of TV cameras, causing delays or even a mistrial. The Georgia trial, which can’t easily be tossed by the federal government, will likely be televised. This trial is a minefield even for an experienced judge like Merchan. I feel like we need to get this first one in the books. It will be instructive to future judges and lawyers.

Speaking of his base, watching Trump crank up his fog machine pre and post hearings, it occurred to me that Trump doesn’t lead his cult members, he herds them from behind like sheep. Then (mixing metaphors) he eats the bread crumbs so they’ll never find their way back to reality. When he is gone I imagine them wandering around the streets like psychiatric patients suddenly released to the community without adequate support.

My understanding is that the Georgia trial will be televised. I'm not sure he'd be able to misbehave too much with this particular judge overseeing things, but your point is well taken. And your analogy is excellent and I'm stealing it.

The media has been doing this with DT consistently. He is in the news everyday. If you are not reading newspapers, you could go days without hearing a word of what our president is doing. Anyways, back to my coffee. Bring on the sunshine.

I read newspapers and I watch WAY too much television news. I've sat screaming at the screen when a lie goes unaddressed. I remember when the NY Times first used "lie" when addressed Trump. I don't mean to paint with such a broad brush.

The only gagging going on re The Trumpster’s barbs and lying comments uttered after his hours in court seems to be ours as we listeners nearly vomit. He’s getting away with murder verbally while also getting free air time.

Today Professor Richardson provided a great synopsis of the MAGA failures in Congress, then highlighted the overwhelming victory in Tennessee by workers seeking unionization in spite of a full frontal assault by several southern governors. She ended her lesson on the trial, one that NO commoner or even mob boss could experience! For the accused to label a witness a liar is just too much to bear! In the meantime Joe is trying to spread his message with limited coverage…..

I understand the desire to protect the jurors while attempting to protect us all from his rants. But having watched Watergate and other trials, I do feel shut out from this one. Transcripts will help as would audio tapes of the witnesses.

His lies are never challenged or called out for what they really are.

Sitting and watching Watergate as a teenager got me into journalism. I wonder if young people are feeling a similar tug.

I’m with you, Susan. Why do we have to hear the Orange Bloviator continue his ridiculous rants after every court session?

You just may have to come to the understanding that there will be mistakes in this Substack including (but not limited to) questionable use of grammar and misspeelings. I try. I fail. I've made peace with that.
