From Minnesota 50501’s Substack:
The goal over the 4th of July weekend is to slow economic activity as much as possible, and to deny corporations as much profit as possible. This includes:
Avoiding any purchases from large corporations, and avoiding all purchases period. We understand that life still goes on; if you must purchase something, buy local, and when possible attempt to do so ahead of time.
Avoid “4th of July Sales” put on by large corporations.
Instead of driving, which requires gas, bike or walk places when possible.
Stay off social media which monetizes our attention, such as Facebook, Instagram, X, and YouTube (and, one would assume, Substack and I will miss you all terribly today).
Why do this? Also from the Minnesota organization’s Substack:
Look, we’ve been gut-punched with the passage of the big ugly bill, Trump’s modern-day contract on America. Maybe by not-shopping and stepping away from our screens, we can spend time figuring out what’s next as we resist these fascist ghouls.
See back here tomorrow.
My Fourth of July flag is dutifully upside down as l do not support or agree with what is happening to our Democracy- we have the right to participate in governance.
Though the GOP and MAGA have every reason for confidence in the American people. Why, we’ve even been convinced to think of ourselves as consumers much more than producers.
