"Perfect parents", hmmm, as parents my wife and I have experienced the stigma and worse that addiction inflicts upon a family. We've endured every imaginable adverse affect this disease spreads with the exception of death. In our battles we've learned who our true friends are (fewer than expected). Most of us begin parenting with great anticipation and hope, but life is not always as portrayed on "Ozzie and Harriet".....thank you for the story and shining a light on the meanness and ignorance that abounds.
Do you think people on the left hammered her? God, I hope not. I wouldn't have thought to have done that, being a mother and understanding just how difficult a job that is. I weighed in yesterday on Twitter and for my troubles got called some pretty rank things, only half of which were accurate. I cannot imagine the vitriol leveled at this family.
I thought you might want to have a look at the exchange I had recently with a goofball about a video I posted on Facebook about the republican candidate in New Mexico that was arrested in connection with the shootings at the homes of democrats
He responded to the video by saying This video has too many logical fallacies to count
I asked him Can you provide one ?
He dropped this gem 1. Hunter's laptop
2. Twitter Files
3. None of you have the integrity to admit you got played.
I knew who he was but I wasn’t sure how old he was so I asked How old are you goofball?????
He told me he was old enough not to resort to trying to insult someone because I disagree with them... so anywhere above 5 or 6. How about you?
My response was ’m old enough not to let an immature goofball distract me from the story about a republican drug dealer that went on a shooting spree
Plus I chimed in on Hunter’s laptop by saying Sorry I can’t lose my mind about a compromised laptop that has been in more hands than Lauren Boebert when she was an escort goofball
He said something about my Cognitive dissonance before he deleted everything
I've been finding myself really disturbed by these people who seem to have serious difficulties reading, let alone resigning. Nasty is one thing, but incoherent and indiscriminate recitation is another, and much more upsetting to me.
Nope, it was in most major news outlets that she'd driven him to the protests, guns and all. That was corrected but I'm not even sure all the outlets that had originally reported that corrected it.
It's not just social media that's a sewer. The media in general can be a sewer. I ask, why is this big news...out of how many young adults arrested across the country the same day? How many were in the news for graffiti? We know the answer to this. Anti-liberal politicians, transphobia, and misogyny are all wrapped into one in this story. It's a hate catalyst piece dressed up as news. It gets people riled up on both sides, so the story gets clicks & attention, while some people suffer. But hey, money is made! I also call out the reporting of it in the first place.
I appreciate the way the Globe handled it, especially today. There really isn't much of a follow-up. Given she's the daughter of a public figure, there will be court stories, I suppose, but beyond that?
And that relationship is what makes it news. It's not fair, I know but the offspring of a U.S. representative is newsworthy. There are ways to cover this story but there are also ways to move on.
Why is that? Is reporting on offspring of a politician newsworthy because it somehow reflects on the politician or it can be used against the politician? (I mean reporting on things that would not normally be news and are usually turned into something negative or used to rile up some base.) It really isn't fair or right. I suppose if one news outlet reports on something like this, they all need to because no one wants to be left out of reporting on such things that easily get attention. I applaud those that move on. Though sadly we know the misogynistic, transphobic, anti-liberal comments and views related to Katherine Clark will linger on long after among some right wing media outlets. What's particularly disturbing is, some people will have a negative view of her for no particular reason other than they heard she was a bad mother or some stupid $hit like that. And Riley will get all kinds of hate directed at her by people who heard false accusations, third hand across social media. Do you think there is a path to a better way of sharing news? (Maybe that's for another discussion.)
This is a great question. When someone decides to run for public office, that person becomes a public figure, and the conversations that lead up to that decision should always include the family. Because even a family member (remember Jimmy Carter's brother, Billy?) will be subject to a certain amount of scrutiny. Not all of it is mean-spirited. It's just how we define what means "newsworthy." If my husband is a drag queen on the side (I don't think he is), then that's not really news. But if Kamala Harris' husband is, well, now we have a story. I really kind of pity any public figures. The attention can be relentless. As for this attention on the representative, it shows how flawed is this system of assigning news value. A U.S. representative's daughter is arrested for protesting. Oh, wait! The daughter was born a son! Oh, wait! It can be really ignorant.
Exactly! Gossip, public view manipulation and making money on clicks should be far from consideration when deciding on news value.
I do remember Billy. Growing up in a Republican household and not paying attention to politics at that age, I somehow got the impression that Jimmy must be terribly flawed because his brother was troubled. How wrong I was to think that.
I'm so sorry about so many unpleasant people flinging their poo.
If they are perfect parents in the sense they indicate, I'm so sorry for their children.
Rep. Clark's tweet sounds just about optimal to me.
I have just begun to read "Off With Her Head, by Eleanor Herman. It's clearly not as good a book as Kate Manne's "Down Girl," but it's also a quicker and simpler read....
I've started muting some of the Christians of Twitter who appear to believe they're here to climb into the judgment seat. As I've been told multiple times by smart people, that's not their seat.

People who weigh in like this are devoid of soul.
I can only imagine how the same people responded to Kyle Rittenhouse‘s mother
Do you think people on the left hammered her? God, I hope not. I wouldn't have thought to have done that, being a mother and understanding just how difficult a job that is. I try not to weigh in on people that I don’t know
Instead I wait for the goofballs that I do know
Holding a mirror up to them usually shuts them up
That’s an excellent approach.

These are excellent responses. "Logical fallacy" doesn't mean what this goofball thinks it means, I believe.

It's like watching someone puke in public.
Oh bother I meant reasoning, not resigning.
I read that same thing early on, but evidently, she didn't: https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2021/nov/15/viral-image/kyle-rittenhouses-mother-did-not-bring-him-kenosha/

Rittenhouse was 17 and living at home, as I recall.
Mean spirits feast on low hanging fruit.

They were more neutral than a lot of the others.
Still, if not for the relationship to Rep. Katherine Clark, it wouldn't be a story.

Sadly it’s too easy to cast judgement online.

Are you on Mastodon yet?
Yep. @SCampbell.
