When a Monday snowstorm hit the I-95 corridor, hundreds of motorists got stuck in Virginia, with diminishing gas, heat, and hope, while authorities sent out emergency texts that they would be there “soon.”
But leave it to the truck drivers who were also stuck on the road — some without gas — to share snacks, water, heat and clothes with other stranded motors.
And here is where I take a moment to give a shout-out to truckers who also work to end human trafficking. (Truck stops are hotspots for moving people surreptitiously held in bondage.) In Connecticut, truck drivers have been pivotal in battling trafficking, particularly along the I-95 corridor. You can find out more here.
A cautionary tale. I was in DC on a Veteran’s Day years ago when an unexpected foot of snow fell. We had planned to drive back to Connecticut that day but cars driven by people with no idea how to drive in snow were bouncing around like pinballs. We managed to get a room to stay an extra night. The next day, as we started the drive home on the Washington-Baltimore Parkway, there were many hundreds of cars spun out and stuck in the median.
Turns out that Washington is quite lovely in snow. Just stay off the roads!
Thanks for the link to Truckers Against Trafficking. I’m going to watch their training video. 👍🏻
