With family in town — one of us a retired history professor — we went to one of our area Revolutionary War house museums. The retired history professor was in heaven as the guide walked us through where the boots were warmed and the guns were hidden. The two 12-year olds in our group were starting to flag, and the guide wisely switched over to ghost stories, including one about a young girl who’d sewn a sampler now displayed in the parlor. The stories caught their attention.
And then we headed upstairs toward the sleeping arrangements, and the guide said quickly, “They had slaves, but they were treated well.”
