Congratulations! One's own decor is far better than someone else's. Pride of ownership.

Bravo to you for doing it and to your son for encouraging you. 🙌🌹

I completely sympathize. The previous owner of my fixer-upper had 60 dogs at one time, of which 12 were living in the house. My daughter and I have been cleaning feces, urine, and even blood off of the floors, walls, and, believe it or not, the ceilings. The heater fins not only needed to be straightened, they first needed to be de-furred and disinfected! We’ve learned a lot about black lights, kennel cleaning and odor removal sprays, disinfectants of all kinds, as well as sheet rocking, painting, and wood refinishing!

We’ve been fortunate to have a superb plumbing service - Daniels Heating Solutions, for those living in North Country, NH - who helped us gut the bathroom and kitchen and rebuilt both. They introduced us to their amazing carpenter who has replaced all of the scratched and chewed wooden doors and is currently installing the new metal roof!

My budget has gotten stretched to the max and we still have the barns to clear out and renovate where the rest of the dogs and horses lived…

Still, we have a fabulous view of the mountains, 5 acres of flat fields for my daughter’s horse and my alpacas, and some truly wonderful new neighbors and friends. It could be a lot worse!

That’s the attitude I’ve adopted. I’m spending into my retirement and oh well.

Looks great! The corner turnstile on the bottom is a necessity for a corner cabinet. Love your new hood! I too had a fan way away from the stove and did nothing but make a lot of noise. We gutted the whole kitchen and replaced cabinets ourselves years ago. One other thing I learned was to put the cabinets up to the ceiling so you don’t get that space that collects dust and dirt. Step stools go a long way. Enjoy!

I’m just going to pile dust, catchers up there that I will never ever dust ever.

lol!

Yay, you! And the job they did on that space is top notch. Just curious, did they move the fan closer to the stove?

Sharyn Pliska's avatar

Forgive me…had a non-stop day today. I see the fan above the stove!

Susan Campbell's avatar

No worries. I just now ran out of steam myself and am seated under a fan.

The vent is right above the stove now. It’s so pretty I’m afraid to use it.

Looks like Justo Construction has Latino staff members and "Roberth" is popular version of "Robert" in several Latin American countries (yes, I looked it up!). I need some work on both my basement office (from which I am writing this) and a finished attic that hasn't looked finished since my kids moved out two decades ago. Thanks for the rec, Susan! And congratulations on the new home and remodeling. Kitchen looks great! By the way, my lawn is worked by AOK Landscape, West Hartford, and they too are Latinos, young and entrepreneurial in fact! Don't get me started on free advertising! (-:

You know what? I stumbled across this company and they’ve been incredible. I cannot recommend them enough.

When we bought our current house in Bangor, ME the exhaust fan was also on the wall about 3-4 feet to the left of the stove. I’m kind of happy to know someone else encountered the same strange thing.

Yeah, that old fan is a head scratcher.
