The Ukrainians are in a war zone, where we hear of daily of atrocities and loss they face.
The first thing these people who are dodging bullets and bombs think of is the unspeakable — and preventable — tragedy in another country entirely. Why, indeed.
Ukrainians are victims of a despot in a country next door.
We are the victims of greed, corporate creep, and corruption at the highest stratum of our country. Just check out the party of choice for the vast bulk of the blood-gargling NRA political donations:
Every last parent grieving victims of earlier past shootings have all offered on camera to serve as a sounding board to the Uvalde parents. Anything I do, they say. Please just call.
That just breaks my heart.

People will reach out when these situations happen to check on others no matter what their circumstances are.
The feelings are heart warming because they care, but are humbling knowing they have put down their heavy burden to show they care.
Now I'm thinking this through *as* a war. It's clear who the mercenaries are, who the troops are. But who is the target and who is grossly acceptable collateral damage? So many possibilities. Likely because the perps don't actually count many people as human beings.
