This sermon — or a portion of it — was already posted on Twitter, so double apologies BUT not all of you are on Twitter, so…
It wasn't my best tweet, typing GAYGAYGAY over and over again in response to some stupid thing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis posted on Twitter, but BOY HOWDY did it bring out the vermin. So my answers, in order, to the vermin: No, I'm not a groomer. Or a fluffer. Or a pervert. I'm also not gay (but so what if I was).
The Florida governor just signed a nasty, anti-gay seven-page bill into law, and I think about all the kids who are figuring themselves out, and what this says to them. No, the bill doesn’t mention gay. Instead, it mentions “sexual orientation,” twice. No, it doesn’t protect parents, though that was how it was sold to the Florida voters.
See me waving? I’m over here in middle-class America, sleeping with my husband, but I spoke up on the topic because I was you, hater. I grew up learning the same stuff you learned sitting in the pews of my conservative church, and you know what? Those lessons were wrong then and they're wrong now.
You're reacting to fear and bad information. It makes you do stupid shit. I get it. I do. But you're not reading the bill, not listening to the advocates, or members of the LGBTQ community in your own community -- or family. You should do that, all of it. You should also understand that your hate spreads like a bad vine. Just ask Oklahoma and Arizona.
If I felt my Straight White Male world caving in around me, I might react poorly, too. But it's not a SWM world and it's not crumbling -- at least, it's not crumbling because of The Gays.
It's crumbling because of you and your ignorance and hatred. You can ban books and ban discussions, but the truth rises up, a flower growing in the pavement. Your way of life really IS going the way of the dodo, and cool, cool. See you at the next church picnic, pal. I'll be the one with the rainbow sticker.
Oh, and happy International Transgender Day of Visibility. Here’s Pres. Biden’s proclamation, which includes:
…your President sees you. The First Lady, the Vice President, the Second Gentleman, and my entire Administration see you for who you are — made in the image of God and deserving of dignity, respect, and support.
Your 4th paragraph "See me waving?...) elicited a rather strong memory... me standing in the kitchen of my condo in Cheshire (Mind you, I moved out of there in 1990.) holding whatever section of Mother Courant your column was in and thinking to myself, "She gets it." That's when I realized you were sock puppet worthy. *wink wink*
Thank you for writing this. I shared similar thoughts recently in my own essay:
“Over three decades of teaching in a high school, I’ve witnessed this evolution of identity among teenagers — and with it, the students’ natural acceptance and support of diversity. What has become a bona fide culture war across much of America is generally a non-issue in the halls of my high school.“
