Count on seeing a lot of leopard memes on social media for the next little while, until a new meme (like turkeys voting for Christmas) replaces it.
The idea that people are surprised when they see the results of voting against their own best interests comes from a 2015 post on what was then Twitter (back before South Africa’s Most Disappointing Export took over):
It’s tempting to take comfort in the discomfort of people who voted for the Republican candidate losing their health insurance, their reproductive care, their ability to stay in this country.
See? We told you.
But their vote affects the rest of us, as well. They did this to all of us, every last one, and I’m not sure I’m going to get over that any time soon. I want to. Very much, I want to. But at this point, I’m conemplating that means
I’m not going to easily get over the majority of white women hurting the rest of us.
This man explains my feelings rather eloquently.
