The first hug I got from a non-family member in what I thought was post-pandemic times was from a buddy in my neighborhood. It felt great.
Going into a restaurant. That also felt great. So did shaking hands, and having people over for dinner — all great. Wandering down grocery aisles in whatever direction I wanted was super, as well.
I’d say it’s the little things, but honestly, those little things add up to a life.
But the various variants of COVID have come calling and because people continue to resist science by avoiding getting the vaccine, we may be heading back to the pandemic’s bleak days of early spring/late winter. As teachers prepare for the fall semester (mine starts later this month), we face the possibility that we may be online again, rather than in class (which I far far prefer).
A new Harris poll says 54% of Americans believe the worst of the pandemic is ahead of us. I hope they’re wrong, but if we are heading back into the abyss — as much as I dread it — we know we can do it. We’ve done it before. And until all the mouth-breathing yahoos get vaccinated, we will repeat the process over and over again, to the detriment of all of us.
Here’s one way I’m streamlining my life in preparation for what may be ugly days ahead, and I do this after quite a bit of thought: Starting yesterday, any one who comes onto a social media post of mine and pushes misinformation will be blocked forthwith. I will no longer attempt to engage them, nor will I give them a second thought. They are free to share their idiocy elsewhere. I won’t be a part of it.
Stay strong, Super-Probably community. And know you can always reach out to folks here. We’ll link arms and do this thing, together.
I hope those who think the worst is ahead of us are wrong. I wish we could instill a sense of community and social responsibility in those who don't want to be vaccinated. The trend I see is those who don't get vaccinated seem to change their mind when they or a family member get the virus and by then it is almost too late.
I am worried that the unvaccinated are acting as petri dishes for some new mutation that will be undaunted by the vaccines.
