Sen. Tommy Tuberville, a former football coach from Alabama, is single-handedly holding up votes on the promotions for nearly 200 military leaders.
Sen. Tommy, R, says he’s clogging up the works because he disagrees with the way the military handles the reproductive health of its personnel post-Roe v. Wade. Soon after the SCOTUS decision that overturned Roe, the Department of Defense announced it would pay the travel expenses of any military personnel who seeks reproductive care in states where care is restricted. (Women make up about 20% of the military, and 95% of those women are of reproductive age, according to Stars and Stripes.)
The stakes are too high to leave them in the hands of Sen. Tommy. His time as a cork could mean there are more temporary members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff than ever before. The Marine Corps’ top general stepped down yesterday. His successor will serve without the approval of Congress, unable to make too many strategic decisions. Sen. Tommy’s stupid stunt has left the U.S. Marine Corps (soon to be followed by other military branches) in “historic leadership limbo,” according to Reuters.
So take a bow, Sen. Tommy, and add this to your list of ignorant acts which include, but are not limited to:
A questionable charity for veterans that distributed very little
Improper disclosure of a butt-ton of stock and stock-option trades
A host of uniquely dumb-ass public statements, including one that compared descendants of people held in slavery to criminals
A public and failed attempt to identify the three branches of government
General political fuckwittery, like voting against something, only to take credit for it later
Ah, but this latest stunt could be considered a win-win for the dumb and dangerous Sen. Tommy. Just look at all the attention he’s getting. And let us remind ourselves that the voters of Alabama traded a man who prosecuted white supremacists for this cork.
Alabama, the state of “great statesmen” like George Wallace, Roy Moore and now Tommie! How about closing bases in that state? How about freezing federal funds? It is time for voters to feel the pain for the consequences of their votes! Wishful thinking, won’t happen but writing it was therapeutic! Alabamians bless your hearts!
Sen. Tuberville is denying women the right to medical care. That is discrimination. It's part of the Republican plan to take revenge on Democrats from all sides. They are trying to make a point with these stunts, but all they are doing is hurting the American people and, in this case women in particular and to go even further, American soldiers who are fighting for our country.
