This week, the Florida Department of Health issued a memo that — contrary to all accepted science — walked that benighted state back farther into the Dark Ages in relation to the treatment of gender dysphoria. Quoting directly from the memo here, the state of Florida says (emphasis mine):
Social gender transition should not be a treatment option for children or adolescents.
Anyone under 18 should not be prescribed puberty blockers or hormone therapy.
Gender reassignment surgery should not be a treatment option for children or adolescents.
This memo was a surprise move, though it is in line with the state’s recent Don’t Say Gay stance. From a 2020 study that actually relied on facts:
82% of transgender individuals have considered killing themselves
40% have attempted suicide
Suicidality is highest among transgender youth.
The state of Florida chose to turn its back on this vulnerable population. The memo also quoted a physician who suggests youths seeking treatment for gender dysphoria should rely on psychotherapy. Did that source mean the dismissed-everywhere conversion therapy? Hard to say, but I’d guess yes. Honestly, prejudice cannot stand up to facts and science.
Just look at how low the state scores on the National Equality Map, from the Transgender Law Center. (Just for comparison’s sake, be sure to check Connecticut’s scores.)
Members of the transgender community look like t
The latest target in the GOP’s march of hate, but this stance by the state of Florida is stunning in its cruelty, and hateful in its breadth. God bless transgender people — especially young people — trying to live their lives in the Sunshine State. If you can stand our winters, come to Connecticut.
Just one more reason to stay in Connecticut
Who exactly do they think they're "protecting"? This is beyond cruel.
