The Republican National Committee unanimously voted last week to withdraw from the Commission on Presidential Debates, a non-partisan group that since 1987 have run the debates. (Prior to the commission, the debates were run by the League of Women Voters.)
This is not the first time Republicans have shown a reluctance to explain their policies in public. The disgraced Republican Richard Nixon, who in 1974 resigned the presidency in the face of an impending impeachment, refused to participate in 1968 and 1972 after a disastrous showing in the 1960 presidential debate with John F. Kennedy.
Republicans have long accused the commission of bias, though it’s hard to hear that concern over the squawking, disastrous debate performances by the Republican actor below:
Taking the long view, the RNC just might be seeking to avoid another cringe-worthy performance by TFG. If there’s no return in ‘24 of the TFG, the RNC may back off this bad decision. They really, really should.
Instead, from the cheap seats this looks as if the GOP has nothing to offer in the way of public policy that would lend itself to debate. With recent red states’ legislation against members of the transgender community, freedom of speech, women, and immigrants, it is beyond even a skilled Republican candidate to (quoting one of the architects of today’s Republican party) put lipstick on a pig and call it pretty.
Once they declared that they HAD no platform two summers ago before RNC Rally Week on the White House Lawn in August of 2020, replacing all their planks going back 160 years with “Whatever He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named (aka TFM) Says” there were no policies to debate or defend, Susan; just the detritus and hairballs 45 stumbles across in his mental meanderings from ‘Person’ to ‘Woman’ to ‘Man’ to ‘Camera’ to ‘TV’.
Does the current Commander In Chief really need to discuss ‘covfefe’, ‘bigly’, ‘Nambia’, ‘bad hombres’, the cyber’, ‘the gays’, ‘the Blacks’, ‘the Hispanics’, ‘the Muslims’ or those mental acuity test results?
Although I wouldn’t mind hearing him tell the one about the Two Coronthians… You know, just for laughs.
Much like Putin cutting off the Russian population from outside sources, the RNC is protecting their “information” bubble. They’re counting on their cult members not being interested in looking beyond that so they can keep them marinated in the big lie(s), fear of the other, anti-science, etc.
