After seeing the $60 million preparation on the front lawn of the White House for the June 14 Flag day Trump birthday celebration, dreaming (again) of my granddkids being educated in another country!

I walk a fine line with my own grandchildren. I believe the office must be respected, but the person in it? Not a bit.

There is NO common ground. And Johnson, the chief felon, and his cronies have been beating the drum for months -- questioning election integrity in blue states. We need to push back and hope that voters make the right choice and VOTE.

MAGA and MAHA is a nihilistic cult, with a stated goal of reducing the American population to 100 million, which I guess represents the jobs that they think robots and AI can't yet perform.

The object of the cult's worship is Donald Trump, and they would sacrifice themselves and their own children for him. They are already sacrificing their children's health, education, and their very lives (think guns, child marriage) on the altar of white Christian nationalism.

So, no. They don't want the same things that we do.

In his commencement speech at American University in June 1963, JFK said:

"So, let us not be blind to our differences--but let us also direct attention to our common interests and to the means by which those differences can be resolved. And if we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity. For, in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's future. And we are all mortal."

He was speaking of the US and the Soviet Union. Sadly, it would not apply to MAGA.

It took me a while to come to this conclusion I wanted so badly to share values.

America needs an exorcism! Evil is prevalent in every segment of the MAGA ruling class. When you think of the hoopla over celebrating 250 years compared to other cultures across the globe it is almost laughable! Yet we act like we are God’s gift to the world. There are moments in our short history where we stepped up yet they are now tarnished by the worst of the worst. Hey, but it isn’t all bad, we have the UFC caged fight to celebrate Beelzebub’s 80th.

I believe we can still turn this ship around. There are more of us than there are of them. And we have better art.

I agree there is no common ground. I have a close family member who is a Trump supporter. We were talking about the former New Britain Mayor who suspended her campaign because of the allegations that were made about her using city funds for personal expenses. My relative's comment was "I find that all suspicious." She didn't mean the former Mayor's behavior. She meant that it's coming to light. I told her, "It's not suspicious. It's called opposition research. How do you run for Governor and not think that's all going to come to light?" I don't wonder why candidates I support have to answer questions about past behavior that comes to light in the midst of a campaign. Common ground? I'm afraid not.

Susan Campbell's avatar

Yeah. That particular mayor has a lot to answer for.

She didn’t think her misdeeds would come to light because she’s a privileged Republican.

And like almost all Republicans, she felt entitled to what she took from the taxpayers. Or she’s just stupid.

Could be a combination but Lord, this looks bad.

The GOP has been doing a curious thing and patsying people in general into doing the same thing: talking in terms of policies and techniques rather than of the goals to be achieved (or not) by these means.

Compromise is a technique for functioning, until it’s not, as with parties who operate in bad faith or in different factual universes. It isn’t something to care about in itself, though not-being-inflexible often is.

Susan Campbell's avatar

Indeed. Compromise with two serious actors is one thing.

Mary Ann Dimand's avatar

Depending on the nature of the compromise.

I‘m beyond sick of white abled men tossing people of color, disabled people, children, LGBTIQ people, immigrants, refugees, and women into the always-hungry Republican volcano.

There’s a state rep. candidate in Connecticut that has publicly stated that LGBTQ+ people should face the death penalty. Lot of common ground there, hey? He violated the republican “don’t say the quiet part out loud” rule. They are scrambling to replace him but if they fail and he’s on the ballot in November I doubt he’ll win but I’ll bet he gets at least 30% of the vote. I realize now that it’s not so much that the MAGA cultists are lost, they’ve always been there like a dormant infection. Trump isn’t just their leader, he’s their reactivator.

Susan Campbell's avatar

Absolutely, their reactivator.

Mary Ann Dimand's avatar

Of course, now many are getting loud and proud. Verbal goosestepping as a parade of power.

I still believe there is a faction of the right that does share some similarities, however the hard right MAGA hold different values and ideas which we will never change. These people and their values have always existed and will continue to do so even though they are a small percentage (and are currently in control).

This is why I believe it's still worth finding common ground with the non MAGA Republicans. Together we can start to turn the ship around. It is no less important or easy to do than what our forefathers did.

"I'm saying it stinks to high heaven": that's how I feel about the current administration and its lapdogs in Congress. "Everybody knows instinctively something is wrong here." That's for sure.
