So the above is a tweet from a true believer, someone who embraces conspiracy theories that for the rest of us, would be laughable if they were not so dangerous.
Turns out not as many of us are laughing as you might imagine. A new Southern Poverty Law Center study says that right-wing nonsense I has become more a part of mainstream conversation than most of us might imagine. That includes lies like the Tragically-Not-Great Replacement Theory (which falsely
posits that immigrants and existing populations of non-European descent – namely non-white people from African and Middle Eastern countries – are replacing white European populations in Western countries)
are now far more mainstream among conservative voters. As an example, from the SPLC study:
Nearly 7 in 10 Republicans surveyed agree to at least some extent that demographic changes in the United States are deliberately driven by liberal and progressive politicians attempting to gain political power by “replacing more conservative white voters.”
But wait. There’s more. The study also found a support for threatening or committing violence against political opponents across the spectrum. Here are some other findings:
Right-leaning Americans are more likely to view movements aimed at building an equitable society, including feminism and the Black Lives Matter movement, as threatening.
Forty-four percent of Americans believe that civl war is a distinct possibility.
Lord, lord.
I've been reading The 1619 Project. Until we face up to our history, this will never be resolved peacefully. There will always be people who see life as a zero-sum game, where more rights for "them" means less rights for "us". And to top it off, many of them believe in the heresy of a white supremacist Jesus who is on their side.
Trump has never made a truth in his life. He has made a mess. He has made violence happen. He has made people go broke. He has made women sue him for sexual assault. He has made hardcore racism mainstream. He has made me age 20 years since 2015. That is all he has made.
