Every year for the last handful, I’ve volunteered to answer the letters to Santa left at my local library. It’s become such a tradition and though it can take hours (each answer is handwritten), I wouldn’t miss it.
Most of the letters ask for specific toys (one even contained a hand-printed Amazon link for ease of acquisition), but then there are the ones that make you stop, such as the mother asking help to pass her nursing exams, or the other mother saying she’s just moved here from New Mexico and can Santa write her mother back home and let her know she’s missed?
You bet you can. Remember, you’re Santa.
Now let me share the fun with you. How would YOU answer these honest-to-God letters I’ve been answering this weekend. Choose one or all::
“I don’t know about you, but I think I’ve bin (sic) a pretty good girl.”
“Can you help me get happy? It’s annoying, always being sad! I would love for everyone in my family to be happy during the holiday! Also I would love a kitten!”
“I have been mostly good but sometimes bad.”
“If you can’t bring me a bike maybe you can let Ellie our elf communicate with me and my mom. Also if you can’t, maybe let Ellie visit my Dad’s house.”
“I would really like a phone; everybody else has one and it makes me an outcast. Please think hard about it.”
“I want a live” and the note stops there.
“Can you pls help everyone that does not have food or presents?”
Yes. I think we can, Olivia. I have big-hearted elves. Have at it, elves.
Re: "I want a live" (I have no idea what this child wants.)
Dear ---,
I was so glad to get your letter. Stephanie, one of our more experienced elves, has taken your request as her special project. She is waiting for the other elves to deliver the magic sparkle dust that will help her create something special for you.
I hear Dasher calling for me to feed him. I better go bring some carrots to the reindeer. By the way, be sure to eat plenty of vegetables. They have been keeping the reindeer healthy for many years and they will keep you healthy, too!
Merry Christmas!
Love, Santa
In a world inflicted with war and hate you illustrate the innocence and wonder of children. Thank you.
