In 1866, 80 soldiers left tiny Liechtenstein to guard the Brenner Pass, which runs through the Alps between Austria and Italy. Liechtenstein was fighting for Austria in the Austro-Prussian War — only there wasn’t much fighting.

In fact, there wasn’t much to do at the pass, except relax and smoke and enjoy the scenery, which is stunning.
