Do I even have to say it?
I'll say it, anyway: The "God Bless the U.S.A. Bible" is a big, steaming pile.
Country singer Lee Greenwood has been trying to publish his own song-inspired Bible for years, and he finally found a venue through the Defendant-In-Chief.
Comes now the “God Bless the U.S.A. Bible,” which, according this excellent explainer from Liam Adams at The Tennessean:
The text includes the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence, Pledge of Allegiance, and the lyrics to the chorus to Greenwood’s “God Bless The USA.” Critics saw it as a symbol of Christian nationalism, a right-wing movement that believes the U.S. was founded as a Christian nation.
Here’s where you get to practice being a fundamentalist. The Book is full of admonitions warning against adding to the words contained therein (and yes, we can argue who actually wrote the text and why what was included as included, but for the sake of this, let’s assume we won’t find Lee Greenwood’s name on the list).
The Book of Proverbs (30: 5-6) saw this coming:
Every word of God proves true;
he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
Do not add to his words,
lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.
So did the prophecy book Revelation (22:19):
and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.
Here’s Deuteronomy’s (12:32) take on things:
Everything that I command you, you shall be careful to do. You shall not add to it or take from it.
At this point in the DIC’s tour through the American judicial system, you can pad his pockets (and help pay his bonds) and choose between Never Surrender high-top sneakers, or this degradation of the Bible or:
Funny, most people who follow the other major candidate don’t seem to need to surround themselves with so many idols. Cult much?
Finally, and in closing:
Finding new depths every day. Truly, there is no ultimate low for this grifter.
Bless the greedy: help them to feel fed, relax their clutching fingers.
Bless the unjust: gentle their spines into straightness, let their senses be clear and their words clean.
Bless the angry: help them to disencode the message anger brings them and evaluate it before choosing actions.
Bless our nation: make it kind to insiders and outsiders, foster the knowledge of our connections to the powerful and the lowly within it, and of our connections to all other peoples living and dying, cultivating and harvesting, tending and enjoying the planet.
